Navy velvet

The colour of a late evening, in a cloth that eats the light.

Black is the safe answer. Navy is the considered one. Under studio light it reads almost black, then turns blue the moment the fabric moves, and velvet makes the most of that.

Velvet is a pile weave: short cut threads stand up from the base cloth, so the surface is a field of fibre ends rather than a flat face. Light falls into it. The folds go deep and dark, the ridges catch a sheen, and a single colour shows a whole range of tones.

Here it goes where it does the most work: a turban wrapped high and twisted at the front, and a turtleneck that closes the line from chin to shoulder. Two pieces, one colour, nothing competing with the face.
