Cracked porcelain

A perfect surface, and the line that breaks it.

The face is painted as china: flat, matte, white, with no blush and no contour to warm it. Then it is broken. Fine cracks run from the brow to the jaw, and small flakes lift at the edges.

It is the oldest trick in the studio. A flawless surface holds the eye for a second. A flaw holds it for longer, because the eye wants to know what happened.

The cracks follow the face rather than fight it. They run where a fold of velvet would fall and stop short of the mouth, so the lips stay the one clean, dark shape on the page.
