The column
One line from the crown to the floor.

Take the portrait to full length and the rule stays the same: one colour, one cloth, one line. A high-necked column of navy velvet does what the turtleneck does, all the way down.
The figure is small in the frame and the wall is empty. That space is part of the look. It lets a dark shape against pale grey read from across a room.
From behind, the details carry it: the twist of the turban at the nape, the edge of silver at the crown, a crystal drop catching the light past the line of the jaw.
